Baroness Scotland who helped draft the legislation pertaining to the not hiring of illegal immigrants – The Immigration, Asylum and Nationality Act 2006 and who was caught out under her own law hiring an illegal immigrant - Tongan Loloahi Tapui has been accused of further lying.According to her, the only ‘crime’ she was guilty of was not photocopying documentation presented to her by Loloahi. The UK Border Agency confirmed that they had seen the Tongan’s passport in which a visa, apparently entitling her to work in the UK, had been forged – and in any case it was out of date when Lady Scotland took her on.
The Tongan has further backed up her own story claiming that the Baroness never asked to see her passport and only paid her six pounds an hour in the full knowledge that she couldn’t complain.
Labour is defending the Baroness because by all accounts she’s exceptional at her job – hopefully this attitude by Gordon Brown’s government will be replicated to others falling foul of the law.
