Driving around Reading you don’t have to turn many corners before being confronted by an embarrassment; an old piece of crap left over from the sixties that every visitor to the town sees and thinks ‘Reading, England is a bit of a shithole’.
As such, I’ve listed my ‘Raze to the Ground Reading Top Ten’ (or as RBC would say – the RBR10) however I’m sure I’ve missed some real dogs out and have had to exclude many personal favourites simply because RBC is in them, having said that I’ve left the real ‘Dogs’ off the list as it’s going to be flattened imminently; so if you think changes are required – please go ahead.
WORST FIRST
- King’s Point (view from bridge – prison on right)
- The old Bus Station/Top Rank/Friars Walk (from every angle)
- The Central Swimming Pool (offensive from all angles including underwater)
- The Travelodge (view from IDR especially offensive)
- The Butts Centre (from every angle)
- The Hexagon (from every angle)
- The Civic Centre (from every angle)
- The old Royal Mail building (view from Caversham Road)
- The old Metal Box building (view from town centre)
- The Reading Chronicle building (from every angle)

Interesting, It seems at least four of the worst are living on borrowed time. Hexagon and Civil Centre, both scheduled for re-development. Bus station and Western tower area, scheduled for re-development, Royal Mail sorting office, to be re-developed as part of Reading Station upgrade. Reading needs better building, the Butts centre is a dead building and this site should be re-developed, at the moment the centre has sub-standard shops. Central Pool went there as a boy, should be replaced.
i take it you like western tower then?
