Everytime I sit in the sun and say “blimey – it’s too hot for me” I cringe over that fact that either tonight or tomorrow the BBC is going to be full of bulletins about ice caps melting and the strand line being 1 mm further up the beach in Dorset and I look at my solar garden lights and think yet again what a load of cods the global warming scare mongers sling out every given occasion.If things really were as bad as they’d have us believe and the planet really is running out of resources, then I guess every inch of everywhere’s used up and every drop of glacial water is in the atmosphere and "we’re doomed Captain Mainwearing".
In a previous post I wondered (to myself apparently) why there were not wall to wall solar/wind turbine powered greenhouses across Australia, Africa and the Far East?
Companies such as Seawater Greenhouse and Netafim already build and operate greenhouses using the latest irrigation, dosing and control systems in areas like Kothari in Ethiopia and Oman.
Earth Tech of Australia see pumping water thousands of miles as a piece of cake and fellow Australian company Solar Systems has demonstrated its unique, world leading design incorporating space technology in a 154MW solar power station to meet the annual needs of over 45,000 homes with zero greenhouse gas emissions.
The various systems developed by Netafim provide solutions for crops grown in both soil and non soil substrates according to their blurb i.e. any desert will do! So it can be done.
The greenhouses in Ethiopia are not growing the grain called Teff to make into Injera, the Ethiopian staple bread because that’s not why they were built. Instead they form a part of Ethiopia’s future development and economic stability plans and grow beautiful full roses.
We are not facing a desperate lack of ‘growing land’ or water for the ten billion forecast over the next decades, we have the technology to reduce carbon outputs and make better use of currently barren land; it simply isn’t either profitable enough to do it or more costly if we don’t do it at the moment. The planet’s rise in temperature now is nothing outside of the ordinary as demonstrated in the 1’500 year cycle.
When it’s cheaper to do so, we’ll see more desalination plants around the world, less petrol engines, more recycling, less landfill, more wind turbines, less mercury batteries, more solar panels, less plastic carrier bags, more anaerobic digestion, less little airliners, more big airliners when, and only when, the wallet dictates.
