THERE’S NOTHING LIKE LOYALTY
Retiring Conservative Leader Fred Pugh counts voting against his party as one of his finest achievements.
The Conservatives were in power – just – on Reading Borough Council in the early 1980s and were planning to ban the return of Reading Rock Festival.
He said: “I had met the daughter of a friend who said to me – almost with tears in her eyes but not quite – ‘Are you really going to stop the pop festival?’
“I could see how much it meant to her and that is why I voted to keep it. I did it for the youngsters of Reading.”
