The British Retail Forum has warned in their November Newsletter of an up and coming shortage of cheese in the West due to China’s overnight discovery of British cheese.Over a two year period from 21st July 2005 to 20th July 2007, Chinese cheese consumption increased from ninety seven million tonnes to a staggering two hundred and eighty eight million tonnes per annum.
With English Cheddar and Rester at the top of Chinese favourite flavours, the BRF anticipate a price rise of around 400% or £32.00 per kilogram to British consumers before the end of 2008.
Allegedly ASDA, Co-op and Tesco have already purchased additional herds to meet the challenge however all admitted when asked that any final product from increased farming would not go to the British market.
The British Retail Forum warns that mild English cheddar will probably become unavailable to the British shopper before long.
Xi Louong Lu of the Chinese Cheese Importers Consortium confirmed that the ‘prowmans’ was a must have for all Chinese people Saturday lunchtime and the demand for English cheddar reflected that.
