Haribo has reacted to complaints by customers that their
Skipper Mix Liquorice Negroes are racist and have removed them from shelves.
The company failed to spot the potential for offense of having black faces with
big lips in packets of sweets.
German manufacturer Haribo will be replacing the offending
confectionary with their new beetroot flavoured Chewy Jewies as from February. I’ve always believed that you cannot be accidentally racist; racism is not a set of words or actions, rather an intent and mind set.
Likewise, racism can be perceived when not intended and these sweets clearly fall into this minefield which they should have seen coming – shame on you Haribo – ignorance is no excuse.
