When an addict injects heroin he/she is risking their life. You can say – good, who cares, it’s their problem; they chose to take the shit in the first place, let them die.
Unfortunately this viewpoint ignores the fact that to buy their drug; the typically unemployed benefit drawing addict needs to steal goods to sell, four times the value of their drug to buy it. This affects society in general.
Add to the above that the addict regularly gets infections from needle sharing which drains NHS resources, we the public pay for their addiction in more ways than one.
By supplying top grade heroin through the prescription service Britain would wipe out the dealers over night thus eliminating their need to steal.
By supplying the drug through chemists/doctors we would bring the addicts into a controlled, manageable and documented regime which would (for the first time) enable the UK to establish the size and nature of the problem.
A common argument against this policy is that ‘my mother who paid her taxes all her life can’t get a life prolonging drug on the NHS so why should we pay for a benefit drawing heroin addict to have a recreational drug’? This is a valid concern until your ill mother gets burgled by a heroin addict looking for easy money.
There is in reality no reason why not to supply heroin on the NHS – THINK ABOUT IT.
