Forget your subsidies and reworked figures explaining why wind energy is a false economy in your back yard because you’re worried about your houses being worth £5k less than they were before; by 2016 this country will have lost approximately 12 Gigawatts of coal and gas fired capacity.
The planet and the United Kingdom (not just the nimbys living in Lower Earley, Reading, Berkshire) is relying on this loss to be replaced by combined cycle gas plants, WDF (waste derived fuel), biomass and wind turbines – the wind turbines alone are expected to produce 12 Gigawatts.
Most of Britain’s Nuclear plants (big ugly structures than wouldn’t drown out the sound of your beloved M4 motorway (HARM)) will shut before 2020. How will the ‘’oh so inconvenient ‘wind slap’ affect you when you’re trying to make a cup of tea in the dark in Lower Earley, Reading, Berkshire then?
Britain needs to adopt wind, solar, wave, nuclear, waste derived fuel and anaerobic digestion sources of electricity. Nimby groups like ‘HARM’ should be assigned to the dustbin of the planet.

Every time I have driven round the north west segment of the M25 I've seen the single wind turbine there and wondered when the entire M25, which blights the land around it, would be lined with a network of further turbines.
Where I live now there is a plan for a local village to become shareholders in a small turbine farm that will both power it and sell power to the national grid. I am less in favour of that than the already blighted motorway network.
What I find very stupid is our future reliance on wind. Wind is an intermittent provider of energy.
WHy don;pt we use wave power, simple small tidal power schemes, use the weirs and locks on our rovers and canals as generation stations, put micro generators in suitable streams, even if they just supply a couple of local houses each.
So am I in favour of a generation plant by the M4?
Yes. Nothing can blight it any more there.
I must learn to proofread better!
Tim, I agree with you. Wind power is intermittent as you suggest but is a part of 'the big picture'.
Thank you for your comment - you really are one in a million.
Your comments are totally valid because if we address the electricity needs of the individual light, the room, the house etc we will be better placed to address the external requirements of the town, the city etc.
I have very serious doubts about wind power, despite it being simply one source. It seems to be the first non nuclear non coal source that has wide appeal, though.
But we are a wet nation, and we are an island nation. The water power is more constant than wind. And, generally, when well designed, less unsightly.
I'd like to have solar water heating, but my house is a listed building and that does look unsightly. A local roof mounted wind turbine would be noisy and unsightly, and the "sell to the grid" meter is prohibitively expensive
I think the points you raise are very valid. On a national level wave generation is the least nimby offensive and it's all year round.
As offensive as it is, to reduce our CO2 production, nuclear is the short term answer however the waste problem is still one of burial as opposed to treatment.
As a country we need to adopt all of the renawable source alternatives however the nimby elite will prevent this without legislation.
Wind is part of the answer. Germany is looking at going 100% renewable from many sources. We are one of the worst in the EU for renewables, with a few more turbines we can catch up.
A listed building can still have solar electric, there are roof tiles that provide PV. And there some very good feed in tariffs now that have reduced the payback time.
Wave power is not as developed, if you are waiting for it to provide the answer it may take some time.
With the roof tiles, Adrian, I am in the hands, often arbitrary hands, of my local conservation officer. But it is good information and I will investigate. I have a slate roof, though.
We need more wind power, and open fields provide a useful location, I am sure farmers would get benefits from having a turbine on their land. I suppose that HARM just don't get it, how can they complain about the noise as they live next to the M4 Motorway, and as forma resident of Lower Earley, I could always here the motorway.
Hello Tim, Adrian and Waste Accountant
Thank you for your comments. I agree that wind power is only one of many options - an ideal scenario would be a well managed landfill site generating electricity from landfill gas with a wind turbine and solar capture attached.
My problem with the HARM group is that they represent pure nimbyism and nothing else.
